NAZARÉ & THE SILVER COAST

Nazaré Travel & Photography Guide

Nazaré is the heart of Portugal’s Silver Coast: a working fishing town turned world-famous surf destination, with cliffside views, fresh seafood and some of the best light in the country. I live and shoot here year-round, and this guide brings together what I have learned about the town, plus sessions and stories photographed nearby in Óbidos, Alcobaça and Leiria. If you are visiting and want it documented properly, family, couple and travel sessions are available across the area.
I live and shoot in Nazare year-round. Family, couple and travel sessions across the Silver Coast, planned around the light and the tides, not the other way around.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

What to know before you go

Nazaré sits about 120 km north of Lisbon, roughly a 90-minute drive, and makes an easy base for exploring the Silver Coast. The town splits into two parts: the beach level (Nazaré itself) and Sitio, the clifftop district reached by funicular, with the best viewpoint over the bay. Summer (June to September) is best for beach days and warm water. If you want to see the giant winter waves that made Nazaré famous, visit between October and March, when swell from the Názare Canyon can produce some of the largest rideable waves on the planet.
From Nazaré, Óbidos and its walled medieval centre is about 25 minutes away, Alcobaça and its monastery is about 20 minutes away, and Leiria is around 35 minutes away, all easy day trips if you are staying in the area. Many of my couple, family and travel sessions take place across these same towns.
