Discover Nazaré, Portugal: More Than Just Giant Waves

Nazaré is a charming coastal town located in central Portugal, around 120 kilometers north of Lisbon. Known worldwide for its gigantic waves and vibrant culture, Nazaré has become a must-see destination for both thrill-seekers and those looking to experience authentic Portuguese life. But how exactly can you get there, when’s the best time to visit, and what makes this place so unique?

Over the years, Nazaré has transformed from a small fishing village into a popular tourist destination while preserving its authenticity and heritage. You can easily notice this in the traditional attire of local older women, who still wear the iconic seven skirts.

How to Get to Nazaré (Portugal)

Reaching Nazaré is relatively easy. If you’re flying into Portugal, Lisbon International Airport is the closest major hub. From there, Nazaré is just about an hour and a half drive north via the A8 motorway. For those relying on public transport, there are buses that run regularly from Lisbon to Nazaré. While the bus ride might take a bit longer—around two hours—it’s a scenic route that offers glimpses of Portugal’s countryside.

When is the Best Time to Visit Nazaré?

The peak tourist season typically lasts from June to September, with July and August being the busiest months. However, May and October also offer pleasant beach weather. During the winter months (November to February), surfers flock to Nazaré to catch the infamous high waves for which the town is renowned.

How Long to Plan Your Stay in Nazaré

Before moving to Nazaré, I visited multiple times for weekend getaways. I recommend planning a 2-3 day trip, which allows you to relax on the beach and leisurely explore the scenic viewpoints. Many visitors come for just a day or even an afternoon, which feels too short to fully appreciate this beautiful town.

On the other hand, many Portuguese families spend two to four weeks in Nazaré during the summer. I don’t think I know a single Portuguese person who hasn’t vacationed in Nazaré at least once. Many families have been coming for 20 years, renting the same apartments, dining at the same restaurants, and renting tents from familiar vendors.

My first visit to Nazaré was in February 2016, shortly after I moved to Portugal. My boyfriend took me here for our first Valentine’s Day. Despite the terrible weather—windy and rainy—I fell completely in love with the place. I felt like time passed more slowly in Nazaré, making it easier to unwind. I thought then that I could retire here. A few years later, during the pandemic, my partner and I decided not to wait for retirement. On May 1, 2020, we moved, buying an apartment, and in April 2021, I became a permanent resident of Nazaré.

The Famous Waves of Nazaré: Are They Dangerous?

Nazaré is synonymous with its massive waves, thanks to the unique underwater canyon just off its coast. This deep and narrow canyon funnels the Atlantic swells towards Nazaré’s Praia do Norte, amplifying their size. Garrett McNamara, a professional big-wave surfer, put Nazaré on the global map when he broke the world record for surfing the biggest wave here in 2011, riding a 23.8-meter monster.

However, these waves aren’t for the faint-hearted. While they provide an incredible spectacle, they can also be extremely dangerous. Swimming at Praia do Norte during big-wave season is highly discouraged. However, if you’re not a surfer, the view from the cliffs offers a safe vantage point to appreciate the sheer power of the ocean.

Nazaré’s Rich Culture and Traditions

Though it’s now globally famous for its waves, Nazaré has long been a beloved spot among the local Portuguese community. Before McNamara’s record-breaking surf, Nazaré was mostly a quiet fishing village, known for its colorful boats, traditional costumes, and rich folklore.

Nazaré is also known for its vibrant festivals. If you’re visiting around February or March, don’t miss Carnival, when the streets come alive with parades, music, and dancing. New Year’s Eve in Nazaré is another fantastic time to visit, with fireworks lighting up the sky over the ocean. Throughout the year, Nazaré hosts various festivals, celebrating everything from its fishing heritage to local saints. It’s a town that celebrates life with passion.

Before Garrett McNamara brought Nazaré into the international spotlight, it was a hidden gem known mostly to locals.
