Nazaré holds the world's reputation for the largest surfable waves on the planet. The reasons come down to the seabed, the season, and a stretch of coastline shaped to amplify ocean swells.

The geography behind the giant waves

Nazaré sits directly above the Nazaré Canyon, one of the largest underwater canyons in Europe. The seabed drops from a few hundred metres to nearly 5,000 metres within a short distance of the shore. As ocean swells travel across this canyon, they funnel into shallower water and rise dramatically, turning a normal Atlantic swell into a wall of water well beyond what's seen on most coastlines.

When the waves are biggest

Big wave season runs from October to March, when Atlantic storms generate the strongest swells. Wave faces regularly exceed 20 metres during this period, and the largest recorded waves have surpassed 30 metres. In 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara rode a wave estimated at 23.8 metres off Praia do Norte, a world record at the time and the moment Nazaré became known internationally for big-wave surfing.

Where to watch safely

The safest and best vantage point is the clifftop by the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo lighthouse, above Praia do Norte. Entrance to the fort is around €2, and the platform puts you well above the impact zone with a clear view down the point. Swimming at Praia do Norte is discouraged during big wave season, watch from the cliffs, not the sand.

Track conditions before you go

Before heading out, check a surf forecast site for that day's wave height, swell period and tide times. Conditions at Nazaré change quickly, and the biggest waves don't always coincide with the calmest viewing weather. A quick check the morning of your visit tells you whether it's a big day or a quiet one.
