Wondering what to see in Nazaré and whether it’s worth visiting? This charming seaside town may not boast significant landmarks or famous tourist attractions, but its unique scenery—especially the stunning beaches and cliffs—attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
Eight years ago, I first set foot in Nazaré, and it was love at first sight. The charm of the beach, the warmth of the locals, and the rich history drew me in. Now, having called Nazaré home for four years, my love for this place has only deepened. Nazaré used to be a small fishing village with a long history. The people here have traditions that you can feel in the old streets, lively celebrations, and their dedication to Our Lady of Nazaré. Over time, Nazaré has changed and grown, keeping the old ways while becoming a cool and charming town by the sea. Living here is like being part of a story that mixes the past and the present. I’m happy to advise on the best things to do in Nazaré!
Over the years, Nazaré has transformed from a small fishing village into a popular tourist destination while preserving its authenticity and heritage. You can easily notice this in the traditional attire of local older women, who still wear the iconic seven skirts.

You can’t miss Nazaré Beach. The breathtaking view of the cliffs is so spectacular that it’s worth spending time lounging on the beach or sitting on a bench along the promenade. Watching the sunset here is an absolute must! Nazaré Beach is one of the top places to see in Nazaré.
2. Beautiful Boats Exhibitions and Cultural Center
The Cultural Center always features a new exhibition (free entrance), usually changing every three or four weeks. For example, in December, there’s a Christmas exhibition showcasing beautiful nativity scenes, while in spring, you can admire historical photos of the town. Don’t expect a lengthy tour; a visit will take about ten minutes. This is another spot to see in Nazaré that captures the town’s charm.
Right next to it, be sure to check out the local vendors selling dried fish.
3. Nazaré Lighthouse and São Miguel Arcanjo Fort: See the Town from Up High
This lighthouse has an amazing view of the ocean. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset and see the town from up high.
This is also by fas the best spot to see the waves!
São Miguel Arcanjo Fort, standing tall since 1577, is now a cool surfing museum inside, paying homage to Nazaré’s surfers and the vibrant surfing culture
4. Municipal Market of Nazaré
This market offers fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, cheeses, cold cuts, dried fruits, and more. I don’t know why it ranks only fourth on my list; for me, this place is almost as vital as the beach! The vibrant atmosphere of the market greatly influenced my decision to move to Nazaré. I visit regularly, and that’s where you’re most likely to run into me!
Note: The market is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and is closed on Mondays and some holidays.
5. Nazaré's Picture-Perfect Spot- Miradouro do Suberco
This viewpoint offer such a spectacular view all over the vilage. It never gets boring for me, and even after countless visits, I always find myself snapping photos of the incredible scenery—definitely worth it when considering what to see in Nazaré.
6. Ladeira Panoramic Swing: Swing with a View
Not long ago, I would have recommended the famous Elevador da Nazaré/Ascensor da Nazaré, which takes you to the second part of Nazaré. While the fare was once €1.50 one way, it increased to €2.50 in January 2022 (a two-way ticket is €4.00). For that price, I think it’s better to walk up the hill yourself, enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine up there, and swing on the Instagram-worthy swing along the way. There are quite a few stairs to climb, but if my four-year-old can do it, so can you! However, I wouldn’t recommend attempting this trip with a stroller, especially on a sunny day.
How it is to swing up there? It’s a bit like flying, but safer and super fun!
7. Sun-Dried Fish Museum

8. O Sítio and Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré
Here we arrive at Sítio, a part of Nazaré. At its center stands a beautiful church that is definitely worth a visit. It used to be a pilgrimage site.
9. Marca da Pata do Cavalo – Horse's Hoofprint
This is more of a symbolic place; you won’t find an actual hoofprint, but it’s related to a famous Nazaré legend. It tells the story of Dom Fuas Roupinho from Porto de Mós, Portugal, who, while hunting, found himself separated from his companions in thick fog. The legend states that he was on the edge of a cliff, and a miraculous event occurred.
10. Viewpoint - Miradouro da Pederneira
This beautiful viewpoint offers stunning views over Nazaré, making it one of the essential places to see in Nazaré. Nearby, you’ll find a charming little church—Igreja da Misericórdia da Pederneira.
